Community: Canes Playroom at Rex Now Open
Yesterday was the culmination of nearly two years of work and planning as the Carolina Hurricanes Playroom at Rex Hospital opened. The playroom, located on Rex’s 7th floor pediatric wing, represents a partnership between the Kids ‘N Community Foundation and the Rex Hospital Foundation.

We were originally approached about assisting with Rex’s new state-of-the-art birthing center, but could not help due to our Foundation’s funding guidelines. However, Rex pointed out a need on their pediatric wing as their former playroom was about 1/3 of the size of the current one and consisted mainly of a fish tank, a few chairs with puzzles and books.
The new room has a Wii, a computer station, a reading corner, an arts and crafts center as well as several TVs…and of course, a fish tank. The room is adorned with great Canes photos and memorabilia like game-worn jerseys of Eric Staal and Tim Gleason.
Yesterday, Chad Larose, Patrick Eaves and Stormy helped open the new room. The pre-school children from Rex Hospital’s day care were also on-hand to assist us in breaking in the room.
It was fun to watch the kids as they were not sure if they should get an autograph from Chad and Patrick, take a photo with Stormy, play with the Wii or work on the computer. I think a 4-year-old Doug would have run around like a mad man, but all of the kids had a blast with all of the new amenities. The adults in the room tried stay out of the way, which is exactly how it should be in a playroom (especially one that has a door that says no adults allowed).
Hopefully this room will provide a fun retreat for the kids who unfortunately have to spend time on Rex’s pediatric wing.
