Recchi Moves to Boston
Former Cane Mark Recchi continued his recent tradition of changing teams near the deadline, as the Boston Bruins acquired him, along with a second-round pick in 2010, in exchange for defenseman Matt Lashoff and forward Martins Karsums.

A question from Robert in Raleigh fits in well here:

Q: With Williams out, Walker just coming back and the right side being the weakest part of the forwards, do the Canes try to add help on that side? I understand all the reasons why they don’t want to “mortgage away their future” but I’m sure there is a top 9 guy out there that is an UFA that a team would give up for about anything.

That was something Jim Rutherford said the team might be interested in doing last week, which is why a guy like Recchi, who is finishing up a one-year deal worth just 1.25 million, had been rumored to be a target of Carolina’s.

However, a lot of teams would have been interested in Recchi for the same reason, which drives up his price. Boston had to give up two young players who both saw time in the NHL this season (Lashoff is 22 with 46 career games played in the NHL; Karsums is 23 with six games played this season) in exchange for a few months of the 41-year-old Recchi.

I don’t know that Carolina was ever in the running for his services this time around, but giving up prospects with no guarantee of a playoff spot wouldn’t have been ideal at this point.  It's fine for Boston, who needs to make a run at winning it this year.

To further answer Robert's question, it's true that the right side is the most thin, although the Canes have a number of forwards who are versatile enough to change sides, so I wouldn't limit the Canes targets specifically to those who play right wing.
