Penguins Busiest of Eastern Bubble Teams
Of all the teams in a fight for spots in the Eastern Conference playoff picture, there’s no question Pittsburgh has been the most active on the trade front thus far.

The Penguins already made a significant move last week, acquiring Chris Kunitz and a prospect from Anaheim in exchange for defenseman Ryan Whitney. That move seems to be working out just fine so far, as Kunitz has five points in his first three games as a Penguin, all wins.

Today, (in addition to picking up former Cane Craig Adams on waivers) they’ve acquired winger Bill Guerin, who looked like he was going to move on Saturday when he was pulled from the team’s lineup, but instead saw the process drag all the way up until this afternoon.

It appears that the New York Islanders are getting just a conditional draft pick – which according to TSN would be no higher than a third-rounder – for his services. If that’s the truth, I’m a little shocked at the low price. At 38 years of age with only 36 points this season, Guerin may not be what he used to be, but it still seems to be a very anti-climactic conclusion to four days of negotiations. Although his deal is up in a few months, he makes $4.5 million a year, which is fairly significant even when pro-rated and could have been a deterrent.

Pittsburgh had already won four straight to propel themselves back into contention for a spot, and with the additions of Kunitz and now Guerin, they may prove to be a tough opponent for the Canes.
