The Carolina Hurricanes’ 2008-2009 Pick Up A Book And Read program is coming to a close as pages are being tallied for all of the participating schools.

For those of you who don’t know, Pick Up A Book And Read is a six-week reading incentive program for North Carolina children in 3rd through 5th grade. The program encourages students to be excited about reading and pushes students to reach higher reading goals. The Hurricanes provide incentives like certificates for all participating students and for the top reader in each classroom, Carolina Hurricanes tickets for the top reader in each grade level at each school, a Carolina Hurricanes jersey for the overall top reader for each grade level and an on-site visit to the top three schools from Carolina Hurricanes mascot Stormy and the Community Relations Department.

With so many great incentives, it is easy to see why hundreds of students participate in the program each year, and I am jealous I cannot participate myself.

I have worked very closely with this program and am excited to announce some of the results for the 2008-2009 Pick Up A Book And Read program.

The amount of pages read this year totaled 3,138,881 pages, which is nearly double the amount of pages read last year. We had 1,943 students participating in the program this year, averaging 1,615 pages read per child. This is 166 pages more than last year’s reading average, so I am pleased to report the students are reaching higher reading goals in just one year’s time. We had participants from 46 different schools, 15 of which were new to the program, and 158 different classrooms.

Being a recent former student, I know how hard it is to find the time to read during the school year when homework, projects and tests are assigned all at once. I would like to take this time to congratulate all of the students for their hard work and thank the teachers for participating in the program this year. Stay tuned later this month when we announce the winners of the 2008-2009 Pick Up A Book And Read program.

For the second straight year, we will conduct the optional essay portion of the Pick Up A Book And Read program for participating schools. Five students from each school will be chosen by their teachers to submit an essay, which will be evaluated by a committee comprised of 10 members of the RBC Center and Hurricanes staff. The committee will then select 10 winners to attend a recognition luncheon with their teacher and parents at the RBC Center.

From what I hear, last year’s inaugural essay luncheon was very exciting. Finalists read their essays to everyone in attendance (including Pick Up A Book And Read spokesman and Carolina Hurricanes player Scott Walker). Walker also gave a speech about the importance of reading before talking with the students and signing autographs.

To keep up with the readers in the 2008-2009 Pick Up A Book And Read program, I hope to see an increase in essay submissions as well. The deadline for the essay submission for participating schools is March 13, 2009 (so quit procrastinating and start writing, for all of the students that keep putting if off). What better way to meet a great Hurricanes player than to share an original piece of work with the support of teachers and parents?
