With the season winding down and the ‘Canes on a roll, we have had quite a gauntlet of media challengers lately. Here a list of some of the highlights:

ESPN The Magazine: A crew from ESPN The Magazine and espn.com was here today to film a segment for the magazine and the website called “For Love or the Game” with Ray Whitney. The feature tests the knowledge of the wife and a teammate of a professional athlete, to see who knows the most about that particular player. It’s almost a little like “The Newlywed Game” and I am pretty sure Kyle Hanlin picked the right subject. Ray Whitney sat down and answered a series of personal questions for the crew, and then his lovely wife, Brijet, and teammate Matt Cullen were asked the same questions to see if they could guess Ray’s answers. We will certainly let you know when the feature is available for viewing. But here is the webisode with Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith, so you can at least see the format.

Sports Illustrated: The most recent issue includes a feature about Erik Cole in its NHL section (near the back of the magazine) by writer Sarah Kwak. Erik, Jim Rutherford, Eric Staal, Rod Brind’Amour and Paul Maurice all spoke to Sarah on the subject during the team’s recent road trip through Chicago, Dallas and Washington.

USA Today: A.J. Perez of USA Today did a feature about Cole as well, after speaking to him in Washington following the morning skate. You can see the Q&A here.

Team in Training: Ray Whitney and Peter Friesen today filmed a public service announcement for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to promote Team in Training. CanesVision did the heavy lifting on the PSA, which you should start seeing soon.

Yahoo Sports: Greg Wyshynski with Yahoo Sports today spoke with Cam Ward for his very well done blog, Puck Daddy. Wyshynski believes Ward should get some consideration for the Vezina Trophy this season. Check back on his blog later today to see the interview.

CBS Sportsline: Wes Goldstein of CBS Sportsline spoke to a number of Hurricanes players following last night’s game in South Florida for a feature on the team’s recent surge. You can read the story here.

NHL.com: Mike Morreale of NHL.com spoke to the Cam Ward today for a story on the NHL’s first star of the week. Dan Rosen of NHL.com was getting in touch with Jim Rutherford and Jussi Jokinen to talk about the importance of the bonus points shootout wins can provide. Look for both stories on nhl.com soon.

99.9 The Fan: The Hurricanes’ flagship radio station will have some excellent Hurricanes programming as always today. Captain Rod Brind’Amour will join Mark Thomas and Scott Jackson on The Insiders today, which airs from 3-7. The interview is expected to air at 3:12, and then again at 5:42.  You can hear the interview here.  Associate Coach Ron Francis will be Mike Maniscalco’s guest on 99.9’s Canes Corner tonight, which airs live from 7-8 p.m. from Falls Tap Room. I also want to make note of the fact that fan reaction to Maniscalco’s Hurricanes post-game show on 99.9 has been so strong that the post-game has been running past 11:30 p.m. on some nights. Maniscalco is also doing most of the leg work for WRALSportsfan.com’s Canes Insider Blog

850 The Buzz: Afternoon host David Glenn will speak with Hurricanes forward Chad LaRose today during the 3 p.m. hour. Also, if you didn’t see it, 850 The Buzz’s blog yesterday posted the NCAA brackets filled out by several Hurricanes people, including Rod Brind’Amour, Ron Francis, Ray Whitney and Erik Cole. An interview that Cole did with Adam Gold and Joe Ovies is also included in that post.
