Luke DeCock, chairperson for the Carolina chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association, was on hand after practice today to present two annual awards to Hurricanes players.

The group unanimously chose goaltender Cam Ward as the team's most valuable player this season. It marks the first time since 2001 that a netminder won the MVP award, as Arturs Irbe took home the honor that season. The MVP award went to Eric Staal two of the last three seasons, and Ray Whitney in 2007.

The "Good Guy" Award, given for cooperation with the local media, went to Tuomo Ruutu. It was a strong choice, as Ruutu makes himself available to the media following just about every game, win or lose, and is always ready with a
thoughtful quote. It marks the first time the honor has gone to a European-born player since Irbe won it in 2002. Other past "Good Guy" winner include Cam Ward (2008), Mike Commodore (2007), Aaron Ward (2006) and Kevyn Adams (2003 and 2004).

"I'll have to show my mom," said Ruutu, smiling as usual. "Show her that she was wrong."

In unrelated news, it sounds like we'll have some nice participation from members of the local media, including a few television anchors, in the Kids 'N Community Foundation's Beard-a-thon. I will post a blog with the complete list when it is finalized, but it should be a lot of fun to watch some faces get scruffy in the next few weeks.

I will be among those participating, and I look forward to the challenge of proving my folical superiority to the three other Hurricanes web bloggers - Paul Branecky, Doug Warf and Jon Chase. I expect a strong challenge from Mr. Warf, but in the end, I believe that the fast-developing shadow that proves to be an annoyance in most of my daily life will be an asset in this grizzly contest.

Media Alert Update: The Ray Whitney-Brijit Whitney-Matt Cullen episode of "For Love or the Game" is available now on espn.com. Check it out here.
