Community: Koozies and Beards
I am excited to say that this is my first experience on this side of the fence of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Back in 2006, I was a part of the playoff fever as a local fan never expecting that in just a few years I would be where I am today. However, in just a week, I’ve learned that postseason play is also an exciting time for the Kids ‘N Community Foundation as it provides opportunities that would not otherwise be possible.

Many of you are already aware of the Beard-a-thon that we are hosting. Obviously, making the playoffs is a critical part of the opportunity to even have a Beard-a-thon. I have to say that it’s already getting competitive among men in the office. I’ve kept a close eye on beards around me in an attempt to decide which one(s) I want to pledge. While I won’t name names, an attempt of bribery has already been made. But, it’s all for the kids (and bragging rights, clearly). All contributions and pledges to the Beard-A-Thon support the Kids ‘N Community Foundation.

I am also excited to announce that the Kids ‘N Community Foundation is partnering with the Carolina Ale House to produce exclusive Koozies. We will be giving out custom can Koozies during the playoffs at ‘Canes Cool Bars, and we will be distributing them in the parking lot and at our Silent Auction Kiosk (section 129) during our home games. While Koozies are free of charge, we will gladly accept donations that will benefit the Kids ‘N Community Foundation.

You can show your support for the Carolina Hurricanes and the Kids ‘N Community Foundation by using the Koozies. We decided to print “Hockey with Heart” alongside the Kids ‘N Community Foundation heart logo on the Koozie because it has multiple meanings. First of all, it describes our players and their style of play (The Eric Staal celebration print on the Koozie also embodies this). Secondly, it sums up all you Caniacs. And, lastly, but certainly not least, it is symbolic of the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. The Foundation recently awarded $226,500 in monetary grants to 23 different children’s charities. This is only possible thanks to the support of all of you. The Koozie fundraiser allows you to be part of the change in our community at any level. No donation is too small.

And, as always, we will have our in-game silent auctions up and running during all the playoff home games. Some feature items include Rod Brind’Amour’s Glen Wesley Night Jersey signed by Brind’Amour and Wesley, autographed game worn Erik Cole and Matt Cullen gloves, autographed game used sticks of Eric Staal and Cam Ward, and a really unique 11x14 stick photo that is surrounded by a Team Signed Matte. Come visit our kiosk, take a look at our items, and get a Koozie.

As you can see, there’s a lot going on. I hope that you all are gearing up for the Playoffs as it is an exciting time on and off the ice. Come grab a Koozie at Cool Bars tomorrow night so that you’ll be prepared to tailgate for next Sunday’s playoff game. Grow/Build your beard and show your solidarity while raising money for a great cause. Whether you are new to hockey or a veteran fan, join the playoff fever (I’ve heard the only prescription is more cowbell if you catch it, but that’s just what I’ve heard).

One last but important note: The Carolina Hurricanes will be participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure this year on June 13th. Team “Canes for a Cure” is back, and we would love for you to join our team. We are hoping to repeat as the top fundraising team for the Triangle Race. If you’d like to go ahead and sign up, visit www.komennctriangle.org and join an existing team (Canes for A Cure). I’ll post more details in an upcoming blog.
