Guy Behind the Guy: Believing

The common theme in the locker room after the game last night was a team that believes in itself. After a quick team meeting before the media entered the room, it was a theme that was echoed by players and coaches alike.

Tuomo Ruutu: “We’re still believing. We won there once, so we know we can do it. We still believe in ourselves.”

Tim Gleason: “I’m sure a lot of people didn’t expect this series to go seven games. You have to win four games, and so do they.”

Rod Brind’Amour: “This team has fought back all year.”

Paul Maurice: “I believe in this hockey team. I really do.”

Look, obviously none of us wanted to be heading back into the bear’s den Thursday night. But let’s consider the moment for a second. Two months ago, we were fighting and clawing to get into the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Tomorrow we will face the team that dominated the conference all season long in a single game for a chance to go to the Eastern Conference Finals.

It’s been another run marked by remarkable finishes and comebacks, late-night airport welcome-homes and sprawling tailgates. I wrote on the eve of our last game seven that we should all soak in each step of the journey: “We don't know whether we will still doing this in June or not, but we may as well enjoy every second of it along the way.” That still holds true.

It will be an unbelievable atmosphere to be involved in tomorrow night in Boston. Not many people will be giving the Hurricanes much of a chance. That seems to be pretty much how we like it.

Media Alerts: We have an 11:15 media availability in Raleigh today before our 1 p.m. flight to Boston, so look for plenty of quotes and interviews locally this evening to get you ready for Game 7. Also, just a reminder that game time has been set for 8 p.m. tomorrow night in Beantown. The game will be in high definition locally on FS Carolinas HD.
