“He plays with an edge,” said Rutherford. “He can play physical. He’s a good skater. This is the type of player we hoped would be available to us, so we’re pretty pleased with the pick.”
Paradis, 18, completed his second season with Shawinigan of the QMJHL in 2008-09, ranking tied for sixth among Cataractes skaters with 50 points (19g, 31a) in 66 games. The Dolbeau, Que., native netted six goals and earned six assists (12 points) during the playoffs, helping Shawinigan reach the QMJHL Finals before falling in seven games to Drummondville. Paradis (6’1’’, 196 lbs.) won the Hardest Shot competition at the 2009 CHL Top Prospects Skills Competition with a slapshot that measured 95.7 miles per hour. He has totaled 30 goals and 43 assists (73 points) in 111 career regular-season games for Shawinigan, where he was a teammate of Hurricanes free agent signing Matthew Pistilli.
The 2009 NHL Entry Draft concludes with Rounds 2-7 tomorrow at 10 a.m. from the Bell Centre in Montreal (NHL Network/NHL Radio). The Hurricanes hold picks in the second, third, fifth, sixth and seventh rounds.
