Community: Do Ice Hogs Wear Sunscreen?

As the office prepares for a mass exodus to the beach to enjoy the holiday weekend, the Community Relations department has been making a few stops around the community reminding kids to protect their skin while outside in the sun.

The Hurricanes, in conjunction with the NC State University Pre-health club, took the Slip, Slop, Slap program to two Raleigh Parks and Recreation Summer programs this week. This program, which was made popular in Austrailia in the 1980’s, encourages kids to slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat to protect them from the sun.

Tuesday, Stormy thrilled a group of kids by making an appearance at the Method Road Community Center. The big pig helped educate the kids about the dangers of skin cancer, and the many ways to prevent it. At the conclusion of the program, the kids each received a coloring book featuring Stormy, Mr. Wuf, and Twinkle, the mascot of the Slip, Slop, Slap program.

Thursday’s events took us to the Hurricanes Academy at Walnut Terrace. While it was a smaller group this time, they weren’t the least bit shy. The kids politely listened about protecting their skin before they moved on to the more pressing questions. These questions included what Stormy’s favorite dance move was, and of course whether or not Stormy likes to eat bacon and ribs.

So now we come to the million dollar question; does an Ice Hog wear Sunscreen? If I had to, I’d put my money on yes.
