Community: Carolina Powerhockey Invitational
Sunday, July 19th the RBC Center will play host to the final day of the first annual “Carolina Powerhockey Invitational”.  The entire day, which will consist of their third place game, a charity game and their championship game is free to the public and will definitely provide some excitement…and in the case of the charity game, some laughter.

The Invitational is hosted by the Carolina Fury, whom the Carolina Hurricanes front office staff has played in a scrimmage the last two summers.  We are all very excited to see the Fury in “real” competition as they typically have to travel all over North America for tournaments.

This tournament will feature the Carolina Fury, the Michigan Mustangs, Minnesota Selects, and Philadelphia PowerPlay.  These four teams will play in a round robin tournament Friday and Saturday at Millbrook High School in Raleigh.  Millbrook will also host both semifinals games Sunday morning.

The RBC Center and Carolina Hurricanes will then host the third place game as well as the championship.  The third place game is scheduled to start at 2pm and the championschip is slated for roughly 5pm.

For more information regarding the tournament itself, click here.

Canes vs 99.9 The Fan
Sandwiched between the final two games on Sunday will be a charity game that will pit members of the Carolina Hurricanes against our radio partners from 99.9 The Fan.

All great teams are built around solid goaltending so we built the Hurricanes team around the best thing we knew…Tripp Tracy.  The team currently includes blogger favorites like Mike Sundheim, Jon Chase, Pete Soto (counting the video board blog) and some dude named Doug Warf.  We will definitely add to our roster and we hope to include a few more “better known” Canes members (no slight to my counterparts).

The team from 99.9 The Fan is being led by Mike Maniscalco and Mark Thomas.  Maniscalco, the hockey aficionado from The Fan, will finally have to put his game up for review.  Though they are building their team around size…we are all basically the same height when we sit in the chair.

Other Items of Interest
First, the event is on a Sunday afternoon and it is free.  To top it off, it is inside so you can beat the heat.  It will also feature some amazing hockey from some inspiring athletes (obviously not talking about the charity game here).

However, if you need more reasons:
  • Canes Hall of Fame broadcaster Chuck Kaiton will be on-hand to provide some commentary, interviews and probably a few “comments” on the wheelchair hockey ability of Canes players and staff
  • Stormy and the a few members of the Eye Care Associates Storm Squad will be hanging out with us
  • There will be a raffle that will feature some great Canes autographed prizes
  • Admission is free…but for a donation you can receive koozies from this year’s playoffs
I will send out some more details next week as things become finalized…but I think this is an event that would be great for the family.  It is easy to be inspired when you see these great athletes compete.
