2000 FOURTH ROUND DRAFT PICK COMPLETED JUNIOR CAREER
RALEIGH, NC (April 24, 2002) – Jason Karmanos, Vice President and Assistant General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced the team has signed defenseman Jared Newman to a three-year contract. Newman recently completed his fourth season with Plymouth of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). His three-year contract with the Hurricanes will begin in the 2002-03 season.
“Jared is a big, physical defenseman who enjoyed a solid junior career,” said Karmanos. “The work ethic and leadership he has shown in his years in Plymouth should lead to a successful pro career.”
Newman (6’2’’, 200 lbs.) notched 16 points (2g, 14a) and 106 penalty minutes in 60 games with Plymouth in 2001-02. The Detroit native completed his four-year junior career with 53 points (5g, 48a) and 400 penalty minutes in 210 games. Newman, 20, was selected by the Hurricanes in the fourth round (110th overall) of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
