Press Release: HURRICANES SELECT CAM WARD WITH 25TH OVERALL SELECTION IN 2002 NHL ENTRY DRAFT
LED ALL WHL NETMINDERS IN GOALS AGAINST AVERAGE IN 2001-02
TORONTO (June 22, 2002) – The Carolina Hurricanes selected goaltender Cam Ward with their first-round selection in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft in Toronto. Ward was chosen with the 25th overall selection in the draft.
“He is fundamentally sound,” said Hurricanes CEO/General Manager Jim Rutherford. “There is really not a weakness in his game at this point. He’s a guy that will develop into a real good goaltender for us.”
Ward (6’0’’, 176 lbs.) completed his rookie season for Red Deer of the Western Hockey League (WHL) last season, helping the Rebels advance to the WHL Eastern Conference championship. The 18-year-old led all WHL goaltenders in goals against average (2.26) and was second in wins (30) and fifth in save percentage (.911) in 2002. Ward, a native of Sherwood Park, Alberta, was named the WHL Eastern Conference’s Top Goaltender and selected to the Conference’s First All-Star Team.
