GAME NIGHT

The defending Eastern Conference champion Carolina Hurricanes continue their four-game home stand against Eastern Conference foe Pittsburgh. The Hurricanes fell 4-1 to Washington on Friday in the first game of their four-game home stand and suffered their fourth overtime loss of the season 3-2 against Colorado on Sunday. Carolina will play five of its next eight games at RBC Center.
Hurricanes winger Jeff O’Neill has six goals in the last six games, including two power-play markers – one the game-winner – at Boston on Jan. 4. His four-game goals streak (Jan. 3-8: 5g, 0a) was the longest this season by any Carolina player. O’Neill leads the team with 18 goals and trails only Rod Brind'Amour (36) for the team lead with 35 points. He ranked tied for fifth among all NHL players with six game-winning goals through games of Jan. 13.
Captain Ron Francis has 18 points (7g, 11a) in his last 22 games. Francis had a six-game point streak broken against the NY Islanders on Dec. 28. With his assist against the Dallas Stars on Dec. 22, Francis became the second player in NHL history to tally 1,200 career assists. Second-year forward Erik Cole has 17 points (10g, 7a) in the last 25 games and Rod Brind’Amour has eight points (2g, 6a) in the last six games including a current four-game points and assists streak (Jan. 7-12: 1g, 4a).

CAROLINA NOTES
Rod Brind’Amour leads the Hurricanes with 36 points (13g, 23a), leads the team with 23 assists and is third in goals scored with 13 markers in 44 games. Brind’Amour has 21 points (5g, 16a) in his last 26 games including a three-point night (1g, 2a) on Jan. 3 at Buffalo and a two-point night on Jan. 7 at Atlanta. He is currently riding a four-game points and assists streak (Jan. 7-12: 1g, 4a). Brind’Amour played in his 1,000th NHL game on Nov. 15 against Philadelphia, becoming the 181st player in league history to reach the milestone and the third player to reach 1,000 games while playing for the franchise (Brian Propp on March 2, 1994 and Glen Wesley on Jan. 20, 2001). He scored Carolina’s first shorthanded goal of the season on Oct. 19 against New Jersey and is now tied for 10th in franchise history in shorthanded goals. He notched a three-point (1g, 2a) night on Oct. 30 against the NY Islanders. The 32-year-old center was fourth on the team in scoring last season with 55 points (23g, 32a). Brind’Amour, who was second in the league in faceoff percentage in 2001-02 (59.2%), has won 647-of-1140 (56.8%) of his faceoffs this season. He ranked 11th in the league in faceoff percentage through games of Jan. 13.

CAROLINA / PITTSBURGH NOTES
The Carolina Hurricanes and the Pittsburgh Penguins meet tonight for the second of four games this season. The Hurricanes overcame two one-goal deficits in the teams’ first match up to down Pittsburgh 3-2 at RBC Center on Nov. 9. Carolina won last year’s season series with Pittsburgh 2-0-2-0, earning a pair of ties at home and defeating the Penguins twice at Mellon Arena. The two teams played to a 2-2 tie on Nov. 6 and a 3-3 tie on Feb. 5 in Raleigh. The Hurricanes defeated the Penguins 7-0 on Dec. 16 and 3-1 on March 7 in Pittsburgh. Jeff O’Neill was the leading scorer in last year’s season series with six points (3g, 3a) in four games. Ron Francis tallied four goals against his former team last season. The Hurricanes are 36-41-10-0 all-time against Pittsburgh, with a 20-20-5-0 record at home and a 16-21-5-0 record on the road.

PENGUINS NOTES
After 44 games this season, the Penguins are 18-18-3-5 for 44 points and are in fourth place in the Atlantic Division, 11 points behind first-place Philadelphia and ten points behind second place New Jersey. Last season, after 44 games, the Penguins were 16-21-5-2 for 39 points and in fifth place in the Atlantic Division 17 points behind the first place Philadelphia Flyers.
In the second half of the season last season, the Penguins were 13-22-3-3. So far this season the Penguins are 1-2-0-0 in the second half. The Penguins scored 94 goals and allowed 122 after 44 games last season, an average of 2.14 goals for per game and 2.77 goals against per game. This season, after 44 games, the Penguins have scored 124 goals and allowed 132 goals. The Penguins are averaging 2.82 goals for per game and 3.00 goals against per game.
