RALEIGH, N.C. – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the defending Eastern Conference champion Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team has recalled right wing Jeff Heerema from Lowell of the American Hockey League (AHL). Right wing Jaroslav Svoboda has been reassigned to Lowell, the Hurricanes’ top minor-league affiliate.

Heerema (6’ 1’’, 190 lbs.) is currently in his third professional season. He has played 36 games for Lowell this season and leads the team with 15 goals and 32 points. His 17 assists rank him second among all Lock Monsters. Heerema, who will celebrate his 23rd birthday Jan. 17, led Lowell with 33 goals, 37 assists and 70 points last season. The Thunder Bay, Ont., native was drafted by Carolina in the first round, 11th overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

Heerema played 73 games with Cincinnati of the International Hockey League (IHL) in 2000-01, his first professional season, tallying 33 points (17g, 16a). He has yet to make his NHL debut despite being recalled by the Hurricanes for one game earlier this season (Nov. 5 vs. Philadelphia).

Svoboda, 22, began the season with Carolina and has played in 44 of the Hurricanes’ 45 games recording two goals, eight assists (10 points) and 28 penalty minutes. He is listed as a rookie despite playing in 10 of Carolina’s final 15 regular-season games in 2001-02 and all 23 games of the Hurricanes’ 2002 Stanley Cup Finals run.

Carolina selected Svoboda in the eighth round, 208th overall, in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. Since turning pro prior to the 2000-01 season, Svoboda has played 118 games with the Hurricanes’ top minor-league affiliates and notched 16 goals and 26 assists (42 points) while accumulating 83 penalty minutes.

The Hurricanes play the final game of a four-game home stand at RBC Center on Friday against New Jersey at 7 p.m. Tickets for Friday’s game and all Hurricanes games are available at the Dodge Box Office at RBC Center, by calling 919-834-4000 or by clicking here.
