Canes Announce Training Camp Roster

RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced the team’s roster for its 2009 training camp. The Hurricanes have invited 41 players to their main camp, including four goaltenders, 13 defensemen and 24 forwards. Click here for the full training camp roster.

Nine players who represented the Hurricanes during this week’s NHL Prospects Tournament in Traverse City, MI, will join the main camp: forwards Brandon Sutter, Zach Boychuk, Drayson Bowman, Chris Terry, Matt Kennedy and Nick Dodge; defensemen Jamie McBain and Brett Bellemore; and goaltender Mike Murphy. The Hurricanes won the eight-team tournament, defeating the Minnesota Wild in the championship game 4-1 on Thursday night.

Defenseman Joni Pitkanen today underwent surgery to repair torn cartilage in his knee. The procedure was performed by Dr. Marty Isbell at Rex Outpatient in Cary, NC, and Pitkanen is expected to miss 2-4 weeks. Defenseman Casey Borer will be in Raleigh for surgery on his neck, but will not participate in training camp.

The Hurricanes will open training camp with player physicals on Sept. 12, and then hit the ice for their first official practices at the RBC Center on Sunday, Sept. 13, beginning at 10 a.m. The Hurricanes host the Nashville Predators in their first exhibition game five days later, with face-off set for 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18.

On Sunday, Sept. 20, the team will host its annual Caniac Carnival at the RBC Center, the season kick-off event which includes rides, interactive games, live music and an autograph session with select Hurricanes players. The Caniac Carnival is free to all fans.

Training camp concludes with a team practice on Thursday, Oct. 1 at the RBC Center, and Carolina opens its 2009-10 season on Oct. 2, when the Hurricanes host the Philadelphia Flyers at the RBC Center at 7 p.m.

All training camp practices are open to the general public, except for Sept. 19 and Sept. 26, which are closed because of N.C. State football. Please find the full training camp practice schedule here.
