Harrison Placed on Waivers
The Hurricanes have confirmed a report by TSN’s Bob McKenzie that defenseman Jay Harrison has been placed on waivers.

As it turns out, the situation is actually nothing new. Harrison was initially placed on waivers at the beginning of the season, but since he was not claimed or reassigned, the time in which he could stay on waivers had expired. The Canes renewed his waiver status today.

As of now, no decision has been made on whether to reassign Harrison or keep things the way they are. An eventual move may depend on the status of injured defenseman Tim Gleason, who is a possibility to return for Wednesday’s game at Florida.

Gleason’s return would give the team six healthy regulars for one of the first times this season, as Joni Pitkanen also missed significant time. Harrison, who made the team as the seventh defenseman out of training camp, has played 10 of the team’s 13 games, posting one goal, two assists and a minus-4.

If the Canes were to reassign Harrison, who is on a two-way contract, that would clear space on the 23-man roster for a possible recall from Albany, if the team were so inclined. General Manager Jim Rutherford said earlier today that the team may begin to head in that direction.

Also, in case you missed it, the N&O is reporting that Eric Staal may miss a some time due to the upper-body injury that caused him to miss the third period of the San Jose game. One would hate to see his exceptional 349 games played streak come to an end, but in this instance, it may serve him better to take some time off and get to 100 percent rather than try to play through the pain, even if he's able.
