RALEIGH, NC—The National Hockey League today announced that Carolina Hurricanes captain Eric Staal has been named the league’s second star of the week for the period ending April 11. Staal earned nine points (5g, 4a) in the Hurricanes’ final three games of the season, including a hat trick in the team’s last home game on April 8 against Montreal.

His nine-point week wrapped up a season that saw Staal, 25, miss the first significant number of games of his NHL career. The Thunder Bay, Ont., native’s 349 consecutive games-played streak was snapped on Nov. 4, when he missed his first of 10 straight games due to an upper body injury. Staal (6’4”, 215 lbs.) returned to the team on Nov. 25, and had 65 points (26g, 39a) in his final 57 games of the season. The Hurricanes went 21-10-3 in their final 34 games after Staal was named captain on Jan. 20. He is one of just nine NHL players to have scored 25-or-more goals in each of the last five seasons.
