RALEIGH, NC – Doug Warf, Senior Director of Marketing for the Carolina Hurricanes and Executive Director for the Kids ‘N Community Foundation, today announced that goaltender Cam Ward will help paint the ice at the RBC Center on Friday. Members of the Capital City Crew, part of the NHL’s “Hockey is for Everyone” initiative, will assist the netminder in completing the goal crease. The event will take place at 3 p.m. and is open to the media.

Ward and the Crew will finish painting his blue goal crease on the North end of the building. The event celebrates not only the start of another season of Hurricanes hockey, but also the kick-off of the second season for the Capital City Crew. The Crew will have their first practice of the season on Monday, Sept. 13, at the IcePlex in Raleigh.

The Capital City Crew is a local youth hockey team comprised of 45 boys and girls, ages seven through 13. All Crew members are from one of six Boys and Girls Club of North Carolina locations. The team’s 10-week season begins Sept. 13 and includes on-ice instruction coupled with off-ice life-skills classes, taught in conjunction with North Carolina State University. The Crew was founded with support from the NHL Foundation, the National Hockey League Players’ Association’s Goals and Dreams Foundation, Raleigh Youth Hockey Association and the Carolina Hurricanes Kids ‘N Community Foundation. Hurricanes Captain Eric Staal, NC State University and RBC Bank are also supporters of the Capital City Crew.

The 2011 NHL All-Star Game logo will be featured at center ice at the RBC Center this season, as Raleigh will host the 2011 NHL All-Star Weekend on Jan. 29-30, 2011. RBC Center building superintendent Donnie MacMillian and his staff will be painting the Hurricanes’ home ice throughout the day on Friday. Media interested in covering the event with Cam Ward and the Capital City Crew may enter through the RBC Center’s North security entrance on Friday afternoon, so that they can access the ice through the Olympia entrance on the north end.
