Community: 24-Hour Bike Challenge

Just because the season is over, our efforts off the ice do not come to a halt.

The Kids ‘N Community Foundation awarded $539,771 in cash grants this season to 71 different children’s charities and foundations in our state. Our goal of improving the lives of children in our community is a year-long effort, and now we have to set our eyes on the fall of 2011. Even though we will continue to visit and follow-up with recent grant recipients, the demand for funding from the Foundation has dramatically increased, so we have to find new ways of fund raising to keep up with the demand.

Thanks to community partners, new fund raising opportunities are coming to light. Recently, the Theta Chi – Delta Roe Chapter fraternity at N.C. State hosted a bowling event that benefited the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. So, if you ever have a fund raising event and are looking for a beneficiary, please be sure to think about the Kids ‘N Community Foundation.

The Athletic Performance Center (APC) in Raleigh is doing just that. They are hosting a 24-Hour bike challenge starting on June 24 at 5:00 p.m. and running until June 25 at 5:00 p.m. to benefit the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. The APC is the home for a lot of your Carolina Hurricanes during the offseason and preseason, so now it’s your turn to work out (all in the name of charity) where your favorite players put in some quality time to get in shape. Because so many of them work out here, there will be special guest appearances by Carolina Hurricanes players at different points throughout the 24-hour challenge.

You can find all of the official rules at APC’s website for the event. Simply, though, all you have to do is round up at least four of your friends, either make a donation of $75 or collect donations from friends and family, and then register for your team on the event website. There will be prizes for the top three mileage teams as well as prizes for the top fundraisers!

It’s really up to your team how you want to break up the biking shifts – there just has to be someone on the bike the whole time from your team. If you have 24 people on your team, you only have to bike for one hour or two 30-minute sessions. It’s very doable, and I know there are already some inter-office teams formed here among the RBC Center/Carolina Hurricanes employees, so encourage your co-workers to join in a friendly competition!

If you register and make the minimum ($75) donation to the Foundation, you will also receive an APC dri-fit shirt and food provided by Chick-fil-a and Rudino’s. During the challenge, there will also be a DJ and other entertainment to distract you while riding or to keep you awake during the 2:00 a.m. - 4:00 a.m. session. While you are waiting for your turn, you can enjoy Pilates stretch sessions provided by Elle Evans. All in all, there will be a lot going on and plenty to keep you entertained.

We’ll keep you informed as more details develop, but in the mean time, get a team together and ride for the kids in our community!
