Community: Jokinen\'s Big Assist
The NHL has a community tagline that states “the biggest assist happens off the ice."

Doug Warf

That statement is very fitting of Jussi Jokinen this season. Though he had 33 assists on the ice for the Carolina Hurricanes, his biggest may have come off the ice.

As discussed in a blog earlier this year, “the Juice” pledged to donate $150 for every assist and $300 for every goal this season to the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. His 19 goals totaled $5,700 and his 33 assists chipped in another $4,950.

Jussi is truly a man of his word as he delivered a check for $10,650 to the RBC Center earlier this week.

Jussi played in 70 of the Hurricanes' 82 games this season, missing two separate six game stretches due to injury. His 19 goals were the second-highest season total of his career and his average of .74 points per game was also his second highest career total.

As you may remember, this is an idea that Jussi came up with and that he followed-through on without any reminders.

For the sake of the Kids ‘N Community Foundation, it was a great time for Jokinen’s generous donation. The Kids ‘N Community Foundation donated $539,771 this year to 71 different children’s charities throughout the state of North Carolina.

To put Jokinen’s donation in active context, his personal donation will provide six full scholarships to the Autism Society of North Carolina’s Camp Royall, which provides an intensive summer camp featuring a 1:1 or 1:2 counselor to camper ratio for kids in the autism spectrum disorder. The donation also provides books at no costs to 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students in Scotland County Summer Reading Program.

I am sure each kid who attends a camp they otherwise could not afford or receives books to continue their education through the summer will greatly appreciate the generosity of Jussi and Salla Jokinen.
