Community: Joslin, Stewart Visit Boys and Girls Club

On Thursday, Jan. 19, defenseman Derek Joslin and forward Anthony Stewart spent the afternoon at the John Avery Boys and Girls Club in Durham. They took time to speak with after-school participants and lead hockey drills in the gym. Stormy even pitched in to help and played goaltender.

This fall, the Kids ‘N Community Foundation provided funding for the Club’s “Project Learn." Grant funds enabled the Club to increase the number of tutors and further their academic component. After scrimmaging, Joslin switched roles from hockey player to teacher. He assisted one of the participants with her math homework, helping her see the difference between right and equilateral triangles.

The John Avery Boy and Girls Club, established in 1942, serves over 780 children from 27 schools. Their after-school program fee of $10 per child is highly subsidized with annual gifts from donors and grants from organizations like the Carolina Hurricanes Kids ‘N Community Foundation.
