On Saturday, June 9, 68 Caniacs came together as the Canes for a Cure team at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure to celebrate survivorship, honor those who have lost their battle and raise funds and awareness to end breast cancer forever. It was amazing to see thousands of people from our community come together in support of the same cause.

It was an early morning for everyone who participated, but the upbeat environment along with watching the energetic Zumba instructor lead a group of participants of all ages got rid of my morning blues instantly. A few of our team members ran the competitive 5K race at 7:00 a.m. Watching them finish the race alongside several breast cancer survivors was such an inspiration, but as the runners passed me, seeing the signs on their back that said, “I’m running for or in memory of” really reminded me of why we were there.

Our team, united in our red Canes for a Cause t-shirts, gathered in the time between the races. Together, we raised $8,160.75 to help fund research to end the disease and support those who are currently battling it. After a short pep talk and team picture, the team, including some Eye Care Associates Storm Squad members, walked over together to the starting line for the 5K recreational race. I was proud to be able point out the sea of Hurricanes’ red on Hillsborough Street amongst the masses of people.

The impact that the Canes for a Cure team made on June 9 was undoubtedly unforgettable, and we would like to thank every Carolina Hurricanes fan that joined us either by participating in the race or donating to our team. You can still be a part of the Hurricanes’ effort by donating to our team before the July 9 deadline. Please consider donating to Canes for a Cure today.
