RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Joe Corvo on a one-year contract. The deal will pay Corvo $2 million for the 2012-13 season.

“Joe and his family call Raleigh home, and he has had some of his best seasons while playing here,” said Rutherford. “We are pleased to welcome him back and to add his veteran presence to our blue line.”

Corvo, 35, completed his ninth NHL season in 2011-12, skating in 75 regular-season games with the Boston Bruins. The Oak Park, IL, native notched four goals, earned 21 assists (25 points) and posted a plus-10 plus/minus rating, while averaging 18:48 of ice time per game. He ranked second among Bruins defensemen in power play points with nine (1g, 8a). Corvo skated in five playoff games and recorded a team-best plus-3 plus/minus rating as the Bruins fell to the Washington Capitals in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.

In nine NHL seasons, Corvo (6’0”, 204 lbs.) has scored 83 goals, earned 200 assists (283 points) and posted a plus-35 plus/minus rating in 643 regular-season games with Los Angeles, Ottawa, Carolina, Washington and Boston. He went to the Stanley Cup Final with Ottawa in 2007, as well as the Eastern Conference Finals with Carolina in 2009, and has notched five goals and earned 13 assists (18 points) in 50 career Stanley Cup playoff games.
