Hurricanes Reassign Murphy, Wallace
RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has reassigned defenseman Ryan Murphy to the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), as well as forward Tim Wallace to the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL). With these reassignments, and the placement of Tuomo Ruutu on the team’s injured non-roster list, the Hurricanes’ roster is set for the team’s season opener on Saturday, Jan. 19, at Florida.

Murphy, 19, returns to his junior club after taking part in his second NHL training camp since being drafted in the first round, 12th overall, by the Hurricanes in 2011. The Aurora, Ont., native scored four goals and earned 20 assists (24 points) in 33 games with the Rangers this season before leaving the team to attend Carolina’s training camp. Murphy (5’11”, 176 lbs.) has scored 47 goals and earned 149 assists (196 points) in 207 career OHL regular-season games with Kitchener. Earlier this season, he played for Team Canada at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championships in Russia.

Wallace, 28, returns to Charlotte where he scored seven goals and earned nine assists (16 points) in 37 games prior to the start of the Hurricanes’ training camp. The Anchorage, AK, native is in his seventh professional season and has scored three goals and earned eight assists (11 points) in 73 career regular-season NHL games with Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and the New York Islanders. Carolina signed Wallace as a free agent on July 19, 2012.
