It’s that time of year again: the National Hockey League’s trade deadline is on Wednesday, April 3 at 3 p.m.

From now until the clock strokes three in the afternoon on Wednesday, we’ll be keeping a watchful eye on movement around the league, especially as it pertains to the Carolina Hurricanes. Be sure to check back here for regular updates. You can also follow @NHLCanes and @MSmithCanes on Twitter for more. Finally, we invite you to join in the discussion at the bottom of this blog in the comment section.

Deadline Reached
Wednesday, 04.03.2013, 3:00 p.m.

It's 3 p.m., and we've reached the trade deadline. Hurricanes President and General Manager Jim Rutherford will be addressing the media shortly. Story to follow.

Canes Acquire Conditional Draft Pick from Pittsburgh
Tuesday, 04.02.2013, 1:45 p.m.

Jokinen
It was no secret, especially after signing forward Alexander Semin to a five-year extension, that the Carolina Hurricanes were looking to move forward Jussi Jokinen, who is set to earn $3 million in the 2013-14 season.

After Jokinen cleared waivers on March 27, he remained with the team for four games, but the Canes found a suitor with just over an hour left before the trade deadline. Carolina has acquired a conditional sixth or seventh round 2013 draft choice from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for the 30-year-old Finnish forward.

Jokinen posted 11 points (6g, 5a) in 33 games with the Hurricanes this season. In 288 regular-season games with the Hurricanes, he totaled 68 goals and 117 assists (185 points). Appearing in 18 games in the Canes' run to the Eastern Conference Final in 2009, Jokinen tallied 11 points (7g, 4a).

T-Minus Three Hours
Wednesday, 04.03.2013, 12:00 p.m.

The clock has struck noon, and the trade front has been quiet around the league.

Arguably the biggest news has been that a certain trade is not happening. That kind of day.

For those interested in following along with the final three hours leading up to the 3 p.m. deadline, NHL.com's stream of TSN's TradeCentre coverage is now live. Sportsnet has also made their trade deadline coverage available for streaming here.

As any news pertaining to the Hurricanes becomes available, we will be sure to pass it along.

We're just over five hours away from the NHL's 3 p.m. trade deadline. The Carolina Hurricanes already made one move for a defenseman yesterday. Could another be on the way out or in today?

There will be a lot of action on Twitter today, which will probably be your best source for instant information. NHL.com has complete coverage of the trade deadline around the league with a live chat and more. Finally, if you don't have access to TSN, NHL.com will be streaming TradeCentre coverage beginning at noon.

McBain a Healthy Scratch, San Jose in the Building
Tuesday, 04.02.2013, 6:30 p.m.

Defenseman Jamie McBain did not take warm-ups and is a healthy scratch for the Carolina Hurricanes tonight.

McBain, who has a season remaining on his two-year contract he signed in May 2012, has skated in 27 games for the Hurricanes this season, recording a goal and six assists. He ranks first among defensemen in plus/minus at plus-8. In 193 Hurricanes/NHL games, McBain has posted 73 points (19g, 54a).

Forward Kevin Westgarth skated pregame and is the team's other healthy scratch tonight. The Canes are opting to dress seven defensemen, adding Marc-Andre Bergeron and a healthy Bobby Sanguinetti to the mix.

For what it's worth, the San Jose Sharks are the lone team with scouts at PNC Arena tonight.

It's worth noting, at least, for a few reasons. For one, this is the final game the Hurricanes will play before tomorrow's 3 p.m. trade deadline. Secondly, the Canes and Capitals face Eastern Conference opponents exclusively in this shortened season, so neither has or will face the Sharks. San Jose will play in Minnesota on Wednesday night. Finally, Jim Rutherford has a history of dealing with San Jose General Manager Doug Wilson. In February of 2010, the Canes dealt defenseman Niclas Wallin to the Sharks, and the following February, defenseman Ian White made the cross-country trek to San Jose. The Sharks then traded defenseman Derek Joslin to Carolina.

San Jose has already been active in advance of the trade deadline, shipping defenseman Douglas Murray to Pittsburgh on March 25 and forward Michal Handzus to Chicago just yesterday. Forward Ryan Clowe's name has been oft mixed into trade rumors lately, and by the time you read this, he might have already been moved.

Canes Acquire Bergeron from Tampa Bay
Tuesday, 04.02.2013, 11:30 a.m.

Bergeron
The Hurricanes were looking for a defenseman and got one, as they acquired Marc-Andre Bergeron from Tampa Bay in exchange for forward Adam Hall and a seventh-round pick in the 2013 draft.

Bergeron isn’t exactly the shutdown-type of defenseman President and General Manager Jim Rutherford was looking for, but the hope is that he will be able to provide an instant spark to the Canes’ struggling power play. Of Bergeron's 82 career goals, 44 have been tallied on the man advantage.

Bergeron, 32, is a pending unrestricted free agent. He will wear No. 47 and is expected to be in the lineup tonight against Washington.

Deadline Nears
Tuesday, 04.02.2013, 10:00 a.m.

The trade deadline feels different this year.

Maybe because it’s later in the calendar year than usual. Maybe because the frantic pace of the shortened season has diverted attention. Maybe because it’s sandwiched between two crucial home games for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Never the less, the NHL’s 2013 trade deadline is just over 24 hours away.

The Hurricanes find themselves in an interesting position, one that’s perhaps more common this year around the league than in any other season: the Canes are not firmly enough entrenched in the playoff race to be buyers, and they aren’t so far removed from the race to be sellers; they’re in the in-between, just points from a playoff spot yet just games from seeing their postseason hopes dwindle rapidy.

“There are more buyers than sellers,” said head coach Kirk Muller. “Everyone is in it, which is different than most years. You’ve got a lot of teams waiting to see who upgrades.”

The Hurricanes have long been reported to be looking for a shutdown defenseman. But with the pickings slim and the asking prices high, President and General Manager Jim Rutherford wasn’t too optimistic just over a week ago.

“A deal hasn’t been there to make,” he said in a phone interview. “If you can make a deal, you have to consider does the salary fit into our structure and do we have to give up too much to get the player?”

Wednesday is currently a scheduled off-day for the team in between divisional match-ups with Washington and Tampa Bay.

“Naturally, for a player, they’ve got it penciled in on the calendar for when the trade deadline is,” Muller said before Monday’s game in Montreal. “As a player, you can only control what you can control. There’s so much going on right now with the standings and games and trying to win, and I think our guys have done a good job of staying focused on the main thing of trying to win hockey games.”
