Six Canes to Participate in World Championship
RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that six Hurricanes players will represent their home countries at the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship, to be held May 3-19 in Helsinki, Finland, and Stockholm, Sweden.

Eric Staal, Jordan Staal and Jeff Skinner will represent Canada at the World Championship. It marks the third time Eric Staal has participated in the event, where he won gold in 2007 and silver in 2008. The Thunder Bay, Ont., native became the 23rd player in history to join the “Triple Gold Club” (Olympic gold, Stanley Cup, World Championship) when he won an Olympic Gold medal for Canada in 2010. This marks the second trip to the IIHF World Championship for Jordan Staal, who won gold with his brother, Eric, at the tournament in 2007. It is the third consecutive IIHF World Championship appearance in the event for Jeff Skinner, who debuted at the event in 2011.

Justin Faulk and Jamie McBain will represent the United States at the tournament. Faulk led American defensemen in goals (4) and points (8) and was tops among all U.S. skaters in plus/minus (+9) at the 2012 IIHF World Championship. This marks McBain’s first appearance in the IIHF World Championship. The Edina, MN, native has represented the United States in a number of international events, including the 2007 and 2008 World Junior Championships.

Jiri Tlusty will make his debut appearance for the Czech Republic at the IIHF World Championship, coming off an NHL season in which he established career highs in goals (23) and points (38), ranking tied for fifth among NHL skaters in goals. The Slany, Czech Republic, native previously represented his home country at the 2005 and 2006 U-18 World Championships and the 2006 World Junior Championship.
