RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has reassigned forwards Tim Wallace, Nicolas Blanchard and Jared Staal to the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Blanchard, 25, made his NHL debut for the Hurricanes at Washington on April 11 and played in each of Carolina’s final nine games, totaling 20 penalty minutes and averaging 8:40 per game in ice time. Blanchard scored four goals, earned five assists (9 points) and accumulated a team-high 124 penalty minutes in 61 regular-season games with Charlotte this season, serving as an alternate captain. Currently in his sixth full professional season, the Granby, Que., native has scored 54 goals, earned 61 assists and totaled 703 penalty minutes in 403 career AHL regular-season games with Carolina’s affiliates in Albany and Charlotte. The Hurricanes drafted Blanchard (6’3”, 206 lbs.) in the sixth round, 192nd overall, in the 2005 NHL Draft.

Wallace, 28, scored one goal, earned one assist (2 points) and totaled 17 penalty minutes in 28 NHL regular-season games with Carolina this season. The Anchorage, AK, native scored nine goals and earned 13 assists (22 points) in 47 regular-season AHL games with Charlotte. In 101 career NHL games, Wallace (6’1”, 207 lbs.) has notched four goals and earned nine assists (13 points) with Pittsburgh, the New York Islanders, Tampa Bay and Carolina. He joined the Hurricanes organization as a free agent on July 19, 2012.

Staal, 22, made his NHL debut with the Hurricanes on April 25 against the New York Rangers, and played in the team’s final two regular-season games, totaling two penalty minutes. Prior to his recall, Staal appeared in 52 games with Charlotte, posting four goals, three assists (7 points) and 25 penalty minutes. The Thunder Bay, Ont., native is in his fifth professional season, and has totaled 18 points and 49 penalty minutes in 119 career AHL games with San Antonio, Providence and Charlotte. Staal (6’4”, 200 lbs.) was selected by the Phoenix Coyotes in the second round, 49th overall, of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. The Hurricanes acquired Staal on May 13, 2010, in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2010 Entry Draft. He is the younger brother of Hurricanes centers Eric Staal and Jordan Staal.
