World Championship Gets Underway

Seven Carolina Hurricanes players will represent their respective countries in the 2013 IIHF World Championship, which begins today and runs through Sunday, May 19.

Defensemen Justin Faulk and Jamie McBain will represent the United States. This is Faulk’s second consecutive appearance in the annual tournament and McBain’s first. At the 2012 IIHF World Championship, Faulk paced American defensemen in goals (4), points (8) and plus/minus (plus-9).

Forwards Eric Staal, Jordan Staal and Jeff Skinner and defenseman Jay Harrison will dress for Team Canada. Eric, a third-time participant, was named captain of the squad. Jordan, a sophomore in the Worlds, skated on a line with Skinner, a three-time representative, as recently as Thursday. Eric and Jordan captured gold with Team Canada in 2007.

Forward Jiri Tlusty will don the Czech Republic jersey for the first time in the World Championship. Tlusty is coming off a banner season, scoring a career-high 23 goals and notching a career-high 38 points. The 25-year-old forward ranked tied for fifth in the league in goals.

A part of the eight-team Helsinki group, Team USA will not face Canada or the Czech Republic (Stockholm group) in the preliminary round. The quarterfinal round begins Thursday, May 16, and the tournament concludes with the Bronze Medal Game and Gold Medal Game on Sunday, May 19.

NBC Sports Network will carry all Team USA games. Televised broadcasts will either be live or tape delayed, while live streams of each game will be provided through NBC Sports Live Extra via “TV Everywhere.” Click here for more information.

The Staal brothers, Skinner and Harrison will face Tlusty in preliminary round action on Sunday, May 12.
