RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has acquired defenseman Andrej Sekera (AWN-dray seh-KAIR-ah) from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for defenseman Jamie McBain and the 35th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft.

Sekera, 27, completed his seventh season with Buffalo in 2012-13, notching two goals and earning 10 assists (12 points) in 37 games played. The Bojnice, Slovakia, native ranked third among Sabres defenseman in average ice time per game (21:12) and blocked shots (73).

The Sabres drafted Sekera (6’0”, 201 lbs.) in a third round, 71st overall, in the 2004 NHL Draft. He has scored 17 goals and earned 75 assists (92 points) in 339 career NHL regular-season games with Buffalo since making his NHL debut on Dec. 9, 2006. Sekera has represented his native Slovakia in four International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championships, two IIHF World Junior Championships and the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. This trade marks the first transaction of any kind between the Sabres and the Carolina franchise. The Hurricanes opened their activities at the 2013 NHL Draft by selecting Swedish center Elias Lindholm with the fifth overall pick in the first round. Carolina holds its own picks in the third, fifth and sixth rounds as the draft continues tonight from Prudential Center in New Jersey.
