Hurricanes Wrap Up Activity at 2013 NHL Draft
RALEIGH, NC – The Carolina Hurricanes today selected four players and acquired veteran defenseman Andrej Sekera (AWN-dray seh-KAIR-ah) via trade from Buffalo at the 2013 NHL Draft at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.

The Hurricanes opened the day by using the fifth overall pick to select center Elias Lindholm from Brynas of the Swedish Elite League. In 48 games during the 2012-13 season, the 18-year-old scored 11 goals and earned 19 assists (30 points) to rank third on the team in scoring despite being the youngest player on its roster. Lindholm (6’0”, 181 lbs.) was a finalist for Swedish Elite League rookie of the year after leading all junior-aged players in scoring. He represented Sweden and captured the silver medal at the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship in January. In 2012, he was a member of Sweden’s silver-medal-winning team at the IIHF World U18 Championship.

Carolina was slated to pick fifth in the draft’s second round, but opted to trade the 35th overall pick and defenseman Jamie McBain to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Sekera. The 27-year-old Slovakian defenseman completed his seventh NHL season with Buffalo in 2012-13, and ranked third among Sabres defenseman in average ice time per game (21:12) and blocked shots (73).

In the third round, the Hurricanes used the 66th overall pick in the draft to select University of New Hampshire defenseman Brett Pesce (BRHET PEH-shee). Pesce, 18, finished his freshman season with the Wildcats in 2012-13, scoring one goal and earning five assists, while playing in 38 of the team’s 39 games. Prior to beginning his collegiate career, the Tarrytown, NY, native played two seasons with the North Jersey Avalanche where he totaled 40 points in 52 games. Pesce (6’3”, 190 lbs.) also skated one season with the Jersey Hitmen of the Eastern Junior Hockey League, and scored one goal and earned five assists (6 points) in 17 games. He represented the United States at the 2011 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament and played with the U.S. National Development Team during the 2011-12 holiday break.

Without a fourth-round pick, Carolina used its fifth-round (126th overall) pick to select left wing Brent Pedersen from the Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). The Kitchener, Ont., native finished the 2012-13 regular season with 14 goals and 16 assists (30 points), and his plus-11 plus/minus rating ranked third among Rangers forwards. In two seasons of major-junior hockey, Pedersen (6’2”, 205 lbs.) has scored 23 goals and earned 21 assists (44 points) in 132 regular-season games. He has been a teammate of Carolina’s 2011 first-round (12th overall) draft pick, defenseman Ryan Murphy for the past two seasons.

The Hurricanes rounded out their 2013 draft class by selecting defenseman Tyler Ganly in the sixth round (156th overall). The Milton, Ont., native played his first season of major-junior hockey in 2012-13 and earned 17 assists in 62 games with the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Ganly (6’2”, 201 lbs.) finished the season ranked third among team defensemen with 64 penalty minutes and fourth among team blueliners in assists and points (17).
