Community: Get On Your Bikes and Ride
The Athletic Performance Center of Raleigh Orthopaedic is the work-out haven for many of your Carolina Hurricanes during the offseason and preseason, and the staff is excited to host our third annual bike challenge. Last year, the event attracted over 140 participants and raised over $12,000 for the Foundation, as nine teams biked a total of 3,435 miles! This year, we want to see those numbers grow.
Most of us have experienced the camaraderie of being a part of a team, but I have to say, there is nothing like the relationships you build with your teammates once you spend 24 hours straight with them. I remember biking through the late hours of the night, as my teammates kept me awake, motivating me with funny stories and good life chats. Although the last few hours of the event were tough, I was pumped about the cause and had a blast throughout the night and day.
All of the rules and details are available on the APC Website, but below is how to get started:
- Grab at least seven of your friends, family or coworkers
- Have each person donate or raise $50 to contribute to the Kids ‘N Community Foundation
- Register your team on the event website
This year, we have a new online donation form! Send it to friends and family to help raise money for the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. There are also enter-to-wins for special prizes for different fundraising levels. Remember, 100 percent of donations benefit the Kids ‘N Community Foundation and are tax deductible.
Each team captain will receive a 16x18 canvas of the 2012-2013 Carolina Hurricanes team photo, and there will be prizes for the teams ranking first in mileage and fundraising. On top of that, we will have prize giveaways every hour during the 24-hour event, and special guests will make appearances at various points throughout the event.
Do not forget that we advise having at least eight members on your team, and your team must distribute riding shifts for the entire 24 hours. Two years ago, the Hurricanes staff team had ten participating riders but learned a lesson from our wobbly legs. Everyone likes friendly competition, so encourage as many people as you can to join your team and challenge them to beat the Hurricanes team! It’s a fun event, and the more riders you have, the easier it will be.
Participants who register and raise the minimum ($50) donation to the Kids ‘N Community Foundation will receive a gift bag including an APC dri-fit shirt and food throughout the 24 hours. You will also enjoy music, movies and sports to help get through the riding. A little bike-riding for the kids can also keep us in shape during the offseason, too!
If you cannot participate in the bike challenge and still want to help the Kids ‘N Community Foundation, you can donate to the Cycling Canes team!
