At a July 5 press conference, a question was posed to Carolina Hurricanes President and General Manager Jim Rutherford about the attractiveness of the Raleigh market to free agents.

Rutherford answered with an anecdote about “one of the bigger free agents” that pondered signing with Carolina on a one-year contract.

From there, imaginations ran wild and discussion swirled about the identity of this mystery player. Recently, various reports and rumors honed in on 41-year-old winger Jaromir Jagr.

Rutherford confirmed to CarolinaHurricanes.com on Thursday that Jagr was not the player he referenced last Friday.

This isn't to say that signing this unnamed player will not happen. Just don’t hang your hat on it.

“In order to make room for that player who would like to come here, I’d have to make a player trade,” Rutherford said. “That hasn’t come along, and it may not come along.”

Lindholm’s Entry-Level Contract

Less than two weeks after drafting Elias Lindholm fifth overall in the 2013 NHL Draft, Rutherford said the process of signing the Swedish forward to an entry-level contract has begun.

“We’d like to get it done,” he said.

Lindholm, 18, will be one of 24 players to descend upon Raleigh for the team’s Prospects Development Camp next week. Expectations are that July 16-20 won’t mark his only time spent in the Tar Heel State this year.

“I feel that with all the information I’ve seen, he’ll be on our team, he’ll play somewhere in our top six or top nine and he’ll make an impact,” Rutherford said.

Sanguinetti Signs in KHL

According to the team’s website, defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti has signed a two-year deal with Atlant of the KHL.

Sanguinetti, 25, skated in 37 of the Hurricanes’ 48 games last season. He recorded his first NHL point on Feb. 23 against Tampa Bay, and the next night, he scored his first NHL goal in New York, the game-winning goal in the Canes’ 4-2 victory over the Islanders.

The Hurricanes acquired Sanguinetti, an unrestricted free agent this summer, from the Rangers in exchange for a pair of draft picks on June 26, 2010. Since then, the Trenton, NJ, native logged 127 games with the Charlotte Checkers and 40 with the Hurricanes.

UPDATE: Sanguinetti confirmed the report on his Twitter account Thursday afternoon.

Revamped Development Camp Begins Tuesday

What has traditionally been small in size and heavy in off-ice training will take on a bit of a different look, as the Hurricanes host the revamped Prospects Development Camp at PNC Arena July 16-20.

The camp will feature 12 forwards, 10 defensemen and two goaltenders, enough skaters to stage a Friday team practice and mini-scrimmages during Saturday’s Summerfest Celebration.

“We have a very good group of young players. This will be an opportunity for fans to see them on NHL ice,” Rutherford said. “It gives our prospects a better understanding and idea of where they want to get to.”

Each day of camp will feature two evening sessions – one for forwards and one for defenseman – with instruction from the Hurricanes’ coaching staff, and Wednesday’s sessions are highlighted by powerskating lessons.

CanesVision will help launch Summerfest on Tuesday night from 5:30-6:30 p.m. with a live streaming show hosted by Chantel McCabe. In addition, closed morning skates on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10-11 a.m. will stream live on CarolinaHurricanes.com.

“I really feel with how it is set up this year where there’s more on-ice activity and the fact that it’s at PNC Arena, it will be exciting for everybody,” Rutherford said.
