Lindholm Might Join Swedes in World Juniors
A final decision on whether Elias Lindholm will play for the Swedish junior team in the World Junior Championship will be made in the coming days.
A final decision on whether rookie forward Elias Lindholm will play for the Swedish junior team in the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship will be made in the coming days, according to Hurricanes President and General Manager Jim Rutherford.

Rutherford said on Monday that he has made “a 90 percent commitment” to Lindholm playing in the annual tournament, but there is a chance the 19-year-old could stick around.

“We have that small window there if something changes from injuries or different things,” Rutherford said. “We’re definitely leaning towards him going there, but that decision will be made final here in the next few days.

“I do think it would be good for him to go there. He’s been behind since July when he had that injury. It’s not his fault,” Rutherford continued. “But when you’re such a young player playing in a tough league and you get behind, I give him credit for what he’s done. To go back and play with his own age group in his home country could really be good for his development.”

This year’s World Junior Championship, which runs from Dec. 26 through Jan. 5, will take place in Malmo, Sweden.

Should Lindholm attend the tournament, he will not count against the Hurricanes’ 23-man roster limit, perhaps delaying seemingly inevitable roster moves for another few weeks.

Lindholm, taken fifth overall by Carolina in the 2013 NHL Draft, has appeared in 21 games with the Canes this season, recording three goals and four assists.
