Hello and welcome to a weekly feature on CarolinaHurricanes.com in which I take your Twitter questions about the Carolina Hurricanes or other assorted topics and answer them in mailbag form. Hopefully, the final product is insightful to some degree, and maybe we have some fun along the way.

Let’s get to it.

What is the Hurricanes team identity? For instance, to be a Hurricane is to be … - Doug A. (@dabrams2021)

I think Ron Francis, who was introduced as the eighth general manager in franchise history in a Monday news conference, outlined this perfectly in CarolinaHurricanes.com’s sit-down discussion with him:

“I want players that are smart and obviously skilled. I want guys who love to compete, guys that want to come to the rink each and every day, whether it’s a practice or a game, whether they are a little banged up or healthy, and every time they stop onto the ice, they’re going to give me all they have, because I think that’s the only way, as a team, you get to be successful: everybody is buying in and competing hard for each other,” he said. “When the logo on the front of the jersey becomes more important than the name on the back, I think you have a successful team.”

Going forward, that’s the type of player Francis, leaning heavily on the advice of Assistant General Manager Mike Vellucci, will seek out in building what they believe will the successful identity of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Could you see the Hurricanes “bulking up” this offseason? – Eric V. (@ericvangorder)

This is an oft hot-button topic, and the obvious answer is yes; really, every team in the league would love to get bigger, all other things equal.

With Francis at the helm of all hockey-related matters as the team’s new general manager, you could see some of that this offseason. The team isn’t going to “bulk up” for the sake of bulking up, though, especially when skill, hockey IQ, compete level and the team philosophy above are considered.

Here’s what Francis had to say in Monday’s news conference:

“You have to be able to skate, and you have to be a fast team,” he said. “I’ve always liked players that are smart. I like players who are skilled. I like players who absolutely love to compete. … I’d be lying if I didn’t say – all things being equal – that I prefer a bigger player. That’s just my own preference.”

Is Select-a-Seat in July again? Assuming the BBQ for early STH renewals is after that. – Jason V. (@jasonventresco)

Correct on both accounts!

Select-a-Seat, the annual event in which full and 26-game season ticket holders can physically select their seat at PNC Arena for the upcoming season, will once again be held in conjunction with Summerfest and the Canes prospect development camp around mid-July.

A date for the barbeque, which was an early STH renewal incentive, will be decided upon and held later in the summer.

Speaking of season tickets, we’ve got a really slick microsite for you to zip around on to see pricing, benefits and more. Check it out here if you haven’t already.
