Prospects Development Camp: Day 4

It’s the fourth day of Prospects Development Camp, and the group was back on the ice for a full skate on Thursday evening.

Here are some notes from today’s session, which ran around 90 minutes.

-- It’s been since Monday that we’ve had a chance to see this group in more of a standard hockey practice session. The pace definitely picks up with head coach Bill Peters running drills on the ice, and I’d expect it to continue building toward Saturday’s two-period scrimmage and shootout.

-- Today is Daniel Altshuller’s 20th birthday. He celebrated with a long day of development camp – power skating in the morning and an extended practice in the evening.

Altshuller is also sporting a bit of a bruise on his collarbone from being caught up high with a shot on Monday.

-- Warren Foegele, selected in the third round of the 2014 NHL Draft, has pretty good speed for a kid just coming out of prep school. It will be interesting to watch his development over the next couple of years.

Foegele is headed to the University of New Hampshire next season, where he’ll join fellow Canes prospect Brett Pesce.

-- The Canes had back-to-back picks in the fourth round of this year’s draft. After selecting defenseman Josh Wesley 96th overall, they picked forward Lucas Wallmark 97th. Wallmark is the lone European in a room full of North American-born players. We’ll have more on him tomorrow morning, but here are his thoughts on this week so far.

“It’s pretty fun to be here and see how it works,” he said. “I’m training with a lot of good guys here, so it’s fun.”

-- Camp invitee Alex Aleardi looks to be a good pick-up for the Charlotte Checkers. He might be a little small – 5-foot-9 and 167 pounds – but he’s quick and has a good shot.

-- The Instagram video below captures a nice play in which defenseman Tyler Ganly scores on a backhand from the slot. Timely screen from defenseman Trevor Carrick, too.

-- Head coach Bill Peters was on the ice for the first 30 minutes or so. Other coaches on the ice included assistant coach Rod Brind’Amour, Checkers head coach Jeff Daniels, director of forwards development Cory Stillman and director of defensemen development Glen Wesley.

Did you know that we have been streaming live coverage of closed on-ice camp sessions each morning? If so, great, and we hope you have enjoyed them! If not, you still have one day left to tune in! Amber Jaye anchors our exclusive coverage, which features a live look-in at the skate plus interviews with coaches, prospects and more. If you missed this morning’s broadcast, you can watch a replay here. Friday’s live stream begins promptly at 10:15 a.m. and will be available on CarolinaHurricanes.com or through our official mobile app. I will be one of Amber’s guests, so you’ve been properly warned.

Friday evening’s schedule again features a team practice at 5:30 p.m. It’s open to the public, parking and admission are free and concessions will be available for purchase.

Summerfest and Prospects Development Camp will be capped on Saturday with the Summerfest Celebration. Just announced today: TV play-by-play extraordinaire will host a State of the Canes discussion with head coach Bill Peters prior to the prospects taking the ice for a scrimmage (two, 15-minute periods with whistle stops) and a shootout. More information can be found here.
