The Carolina Hurricanes began play in the NHL in 1997 but the franchise has a history that actually dates back to 1971.
At that time, the New England/Hartford Whalers joined the now defunct World Hockey Association. When the WHA folded, the Whalers were welcomed into the NHL as an expansion team in 1979.
Finally, after the 1996-1997 season, the Hartford Whalers relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina and have since been known as the Carolina Hurricanes.
