The Hurricanes established the Carolina Hurricanes Alumni Association in 2011, as a way to allow former players to continue to work with the team and the Kids ‘N Community Foundation after retirement, through appearances and community outreach. The Alumni Association also gives former Hurricanes players and staff members a way to connect with their former teammates and co-workers, as well as the current team.
Alumni Fantasy Game
On April 1, 2012, the Hurricanes held their inaugural Canes Alumni Fantasy Game. The event provided fans with the opportunity to get a full NHL experience, skating in a game that included 10 locally-based Hurricanes alumni on the ice at the RBC Center. Spots in the game sold quickly, and more than 3,000 fans attended the game, as Rod Brind’Amour’s White team topped the Red team captained by Ron Francis, 9-6. Read a recap of the event here. The event raised more than $50,000 for the Carolina Hurricanes Kids ‘N Community Foundation.
Other Alumni Outreach
In addition to the Alumni Game, members of the Hurricanes Alumni Association have also participated in other Kids ‘N Community Foundation events, such as the annual Kids ‘N Community Golf Tournament. The group also made headlines in December 2011, when several members of the Hurricanes Alumni Association stepped up to donate replacement Christmas presents for a Ft. Bragg military family that had its gifts stolen. Hurricanes mascot Stormy and Alumnus Shane Willis traveled to Fort Bragg to surprise the family and deliver the replacement gifts. The following former Hurricanes players established their permanent residency in North Carolina following the conclusions of their playing career. These local alumni form the core of the Hurricanes Alumni Association.
