This is Laken’s first year as a member of the Eye Care Associates Storm Squad. After attending school at Virginia Tech, she lived in Washington, D.C., before finally settling in North Carolina. Laken is a middle school teacher in the Triangle and loves working with children of all ages. You can usually find her at a concert, out with her two dogs or rooting on her favorite football teams at a local restaurant. Although she still loves cheering for the Hokies, Laken is most excited about cheering on the Hurricanes.
Q&A with Laken
What are the top three things on your bucket list?
Go to Finland and sleep in an igloo under the Northern Lights; go on a safari and climb Kilimanjaro in Tanzania; and I’m terrified of heights, but probably go skydiving!
What would your friends be surprised to know about you?
That I have a tattoo!
If you could have been born in another country, what country would it be?
Probably Greece. It’s so gorgeous, and I would have loved being on the beaches and eating Mediterranean food all day!
Who was your favorite musical artist when you were in the 5th grade?
Spice Girls! The Olympics made me want a comeback tour so bad!
What is the craziest thing your parents did to embarrass you growing up?
My dad is pretty ridiculous so he tried anything and everything! I think I was so used to it though because I was never really embarrassed. I always thought it was funny. My older sister was always mortified though!
What is your dream job, other than being a member of the Storm Squad?
A sports broadcaster! Now that Erin Andrews is gone, I think I have a shot!
What is your favorite quote?
“This too shall pass.” I love the meaning behind it, and no matter what the situation is, I always remind myself of this.
Would you rather be a princess or a rock star?
Princess! I am ridiculously obsessed with Kate Middleton. She is the epitome of a princess, and I think she is wonderful!
What is your least favorite subject that you studied in school?
Philosophy. I hated that there wasn’t a “right” answer for things. I don’t know what Plato was thinking!
What is the most memorable sporting event that you’ve attended?
When I was younger, my dad took us all to see the Cleveland Indians during a playoff game. They were losing pretty bad so he made us leave around the 7th inning so we would miss traffic. The Indians ended up coming back and winning! It’s still one of the biggest comeback games in baseball history! We have never let him live that down. That’s mostly why its memorable!
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
I think I would be like Mystique from X-Men. She is a shape-shifter and able to change anything and everything about the way she looks. So, I could shift into looking like someone important, like the President! Or I could be a total girl and just change my hair any time I wanted to!
Night owl or early bird?
I wake up by 5 a.m. every day so I should say early bird but I really prefer to be a night owl.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Ben & Jerry’s Cocunut Seven Layer Bar Milkshake! It’s amazing! I get them so much they all know me when I walk in. They don’t even ask what I want anymore!
NC State, Duke, or UNC?
Neither. Virginia Tech! Let’s go Hokies!
What is your favorite time of year and why?
Fall. I love hockey, football, sweaters, tights, boots and fall weather!
In what even would you win an Olympic gold medal?
Chatting up strangers! I love talking to people when I am out. Cashiers are my favorite. I feel like they see so many people all day, and I just want them to have a moment during their day when they smile!
What is one thing you can’t live without?
My dogs. I hate being without them!
What is your most prized possession?
Either the glass bird figurines that my Grandpa gave me or the antique card catalogue that I restored.
What candy reminds you most of your youth?
Air Heads! I used to love the white ones. I got them after all my softball games! Also, Wonderballs! They were chocolate balls full of sweet tarts. They were so cool!
What TV show do you wish was still on the air?
I love old Nickelodeon shows! "Ah! Real Monsters," "Rocko’s Modern Life," and "Hey Arnold!" Those would be great!
What is the funniest movie that you have ever seen?
It’s probably not the funniest, but "Anchorman" is one of my all-time favorites! I quote it all the time!
What is your favorite book you read as a child?
I loved "The Chronicles of Narnia" and the "Goosebumps" books.
