Hurricanes Elite Camp
U18, U16 and U14: 1 AAA group & 1 AA group
Available spots: 24 skaters and 3 goalies in each group
The Carolina Hurricanes will be hosting an Elite Hockey Camp at PNC Arena, and it will be modeled after the Carolina Hurricanes Prospect Development camp taking place the same week. The camp will consist of four days of elite training on and off the ice. The players will change in NHL locker rooms, learn from the Carolina Hurricanes coaching and hockey staff at every session and eat the same meals as the Canes prospects. Camp space is limited to the first 54 players (24 skaters and 3 goalies in two groups). The camp is open to U18, U16 and U14 players with AAA and AA experience.
Each day, on-ice instruction will be run by Carolina Hurricanes coaches.
Off-ice training will be led by Hurricanes trainers Pete Friesen and Doug Bennett. Friesen has been with the Canes for 16 seasons and has been a professional trainer for over 30 years. Bennett is in his fourth season in the NHL. The camp will also include elite skating instruction from Kim Muir, the skating instructor for the Charlotte Checkers (Hurricanes AHL affiliate). Muir also works with NHL teams and has over 100 students playing in the NHL or minor leagues.
Schedule Overview: The camp will run from Tuesday, July 22 through Saturday, July 26. Each day will include 90 minutes of skills practice with Carolina Hurricanes coaches in the morning, followed by an hour of training with the Hurricanes strength and conditioning staff. Lunch will be provided Tuesday through Friday to help educate players on what they should be putting in their bodies to refuel during a hockey season. Following lunch, activities will include NHL-style practices and/or a one-hour power skating lesson with Muir. Each day will also feature an hour lecture period with topics that include social media, nutrition and video breakdown with Hurricanes video coach Chris Huffine. On Saturday, the camp will conclude with a game and skills competition. Players will receive a practice jersey and a work-out shirt and shorts.
Group Overview: Group 1 will consist of any player ages U14 – U18 who play at the AA travel level. Group 2 will consist of any player ages U14 – U18 who play at the AAA travel level.
Testimonials for 2013 Hurricanes Elite Camp
“I don't believe there was anything more the Hurricanes could have done that would have provided him with a better experience.”
-- Tim Silcox, satisfied parent
“The off- ice training and the nutritional info were also great to have for boys this age. Hearing that type of information from experts, not just their parents, makes a big difference.”
-- Ed Rosen, thankful parent
“Wow! What an incredible and memorable experience you have put together for these youth hockey players! Sam is having a great time, and I asked him yesterday evening how he would describe the camp in one word. His word was 'Impressive.'"
-- James Thornton, impressed parent
“To have such a large presence of the Hurricanes coaching staff work with the kids is not only unheard of at any other camp, but is truly something these kids will remember for the rest of their lives. Your goal was to create the 'premiere camp in the southeast ,' and I can tell you have the recipe for success moving forward as you are treating these kids like they are real prospects/draft picks.”
-- Rick Daniel, excited parent
