EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- Marty Murray came up big for the Carolina Hurricanes.

The 5-foot-9 forward scored two goals to help the Hurricanes snap a three-game winless streak with a 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night.

Murray scored twice in the first period against goalie Tommy Salo, making his first appearance after missing more than a month because of a hip injury.

"It's been a while, too long I guess, but it was nice to contribute," Murray said. "We got the win and that's the biggest thing."

Radim Vrbata also scored for the Hurricanes, who won for just the third time in 11 games, and Kevin Weekes made 25 stops for his eighth win of the season.

Alexei Semenov and Ales Hemsky scored goals in the final four minutes for Edmonton, 1-6-1-0 in its last eight games.

"Sixty minutes is what we need to be successful," Oilers forward Ryan Smyth. "We didn't initiate as far as coming out banging. That cost us some momentum."

Salo made 22 saves in his first game since Nov. 8.

"It doesn't matter how you give up the goals, you're still disappointed," said Salo. "It's tough when you're down 2-0 and the first period and you have to catch them."

Murray opened the scoring off a rebound midway through the first period, and made it 2-0 about five minutes later, one-timing Brett Hedican's point shot past Salo. Vrbata made it 3-0 on a five-on-three power play early in the third period.

"Murray is a great player and he certainly has a nose for the net," said Carolina forward Erik Cole, who assisted on Murray's first goal. "He's quick and he's got a great set of hands. He was Johnny-on-the-spot tonight."
