MONTREAL (AP) _ Mike Ribeiro made the most of a second chance at a perfect setup.

Ribeiro scored 3:38 into overtime to lift the Montreal Canadiens to a 1-0 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night.

Montreal earned its second straight overtime win as Ribeiro scored his 17th goal from the right edge of the crease by redirecting Andrei Markov's pass from the left side past Kevin Weekes.

Markov teased Ribeiro after he fanned on a similar pass from the Canadiens defenseman in the first period.

``I told him, `If you give me one more, I won't miss it,' and that's what happened,'' Ribeiro said.

Jose Theodore made 18 saves for his sixth shutout of the season, giving Montreal its season-high fourth straight win.

The Canadiens, who beat Boston 3-2 Thursday, have won five of six.

Weekes stopped 31 shots and was within 1:22 of setting the Hurricanes' record of seven shutouts in a season when Ribeiro scored.

``It was a great pass by Markov, and Ribeiro was hiding out and he made a good play,'' Weekes said. ``Unfortunately it goes against us and it's an overtime loss for us.''

Weekes and teammate Arturs Irbe have both recorded six shutouts in a season with Carolina.

Montreal went 0-for-9 on the power play. Carolina was 0-for-6.

``It wasn't an easy game to play,'' Ribeiro said. ``That's a team that gives a 60-minute effort. They're always in your face. Our power play had a hard time adjusting, but thankfully we came away with a huge two points.''

Montreal, which lost a season-high four straight following the All-Star break, is seventh in the Eastern Conference with 74 points.

The Hurricanes fell to 2-1 on a four-game road trip, but extended their point streak to six games (3-0-1-2).

Theodore was shaken up when Hurricanes forward Justin Williams collided with him after he stopped Kevyn Adams on a short-handed breakaway late in the third.

``I have a headache right now, but it's part of the game,'' Theodore said. ``I thought he ran me pretty hard, but if that's the price to pay for a shutout and a win, no problem.''

Adams lobbied the referees for a penalty shot because he was hauled down from behind by Montreal captain Saku Koivu. But instead, Koivu was sent off for hooking.

``I guess his explanation was that he hooked me hard, but I wasn't in enough,'' Kevyn Adams said. ``But I don't know, I find that hard to believe. I'd like to see it again. I was alone, I was getting ready to make the play and all of a sudden the guy takes me down like that. To me, that's a penalty shot.''

Carolina's Craig Adams came close to scoring about five minutes into the third after Theodore tried to play a puck behind his net. Theodore scrambled back to his crease just in time to make a pad save on Adams, who tried to stuff in the puck from the right side.
