Hurricanes 8, Islanders 3

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) -The Carolina Hurricanes had a bad night on Friday. On Saturday, they made sure the New York Islanders felt their pain.

Rod Brind'Amour notched his third career hat trick, Ray Whitney and Justin Williams each scored twice and the Carolina Hurricanes scored six times on their first 13 shots to rout the New York Islanders 8-3 on Saturday night.

"We had to play our game and not worry about the outcome of a game that's already past us," Brind'Amour said of the 7-4 home drubbing to Montreal the night before. "Tonight, we were rolling four lines a little better. We had good flow, and obviously, we capitalized on our chances."

Brind'Amour extends his current point scoring streak to nine games (6-10-16).

Eric Staal also scored for Carolina, which got three power-play goals and another just as a power play ended.

Backup goalie John Grahame picked up his first win of the season by making 25 saves.

"It was a case of where we just got beat by a better team tonight," Islanders forward Mike Sillinger said. "They were the hungrier team."

Ruslan Fedotenko, Marc-Andre Bergeron and Sillinger scored for New York, which lost for the second time at home (3-2-0).

Rick DiPietro started, and stopped just seven shots before being relieved by Wade Dubielewicz, who made 11 more saves.

"I don't want to sit here and make excuses for what happened tonight," DiPietro said. "Whatever it was, hopefully we got it out of our system, and we can get back to the way we were playing.

Carolina opened the scoring with one second left on their first power-play chance. Brind'Amour, standing at the left hash mark, one-timed a pass from Jeffrey Hamilton past DiPietro at 2:58.

The Hurricanes got a gift to go up 2-0 at 9:25. DiPietro went behind the net to play the puck and missed. Matt Cullen quickly passed it out to Whitney, who had an open net for a target.

Brind'Amour scored five seconds after a power play ended to put the Hurricanes up 3-0 at 14:12. He outdueled Brendan Witt for a rebound and put it past DiPietro.

The Hurricanes went up by four 77 seconds into the second period when Whitney scored on the rebound of his own shot.

"My two tonight were not pretty," Whitney said. "There wasn't much thought process on either goal."

New York finally broke through on Grahame when Fedotenko was credited with a goal that went off his chest during a scramble at 2:51. The goal withstood video review.

Carolina went up 5-1 when Williams, left alone in the slot, one-timed a shot past DiPietro at 4:36.

It became 6-1 at 7:48 when Staal scored his team-leading ninth goal.

That was it for DiPietro, who was pulled for Dubielewicz.

Bergeron made it 6-2 with a deflected slap shot at 10:27.

Carolina cashed in on both parts of a 54-second two-man advantage in a 21-second span to go up 8-2 early in the third period.

Brind'Amour completed his hat trick at 3:23, and Williams scored his second of the night at 3:46.

Brind'Amour took a hooking penalty at 6:59 of the period. The resulting two minutes gave him 1,000 career penalty minutes.

"It wasn't much of a penalty, was it?," Brind'Amour said. "Oh well, when you've been in the league this long, you're bound to come near a record or two."

Sillinger scored a power-play goal with 5.1 seconds left in the game.

"It's mental," Islanders captain Bill Guerin said. "We were physically ready, and I thought we were mentally ready, but we made mental mistakes. We were stubborn. We made simple mistakes that ended up costing us."

Notes: The Islanders had the previous six days off. New York is in a stretch where they play just six games in a 23-day span, all at home. "This is the longest I've ever gone in my career between games," said forward Miroslav Satan. ... Islanders forward Mike Sillinger will play in his 1,000th NHL game on Thursday, New York's next game. ... Carolina left wing Erik Cole returned to the lineup after missing four games with a foot injury and contributed three assists...The most goals New York allowed in a home game was nine. It happened once, a 9-6 loss to Los Angeles on Oct. 20, 1981.
