FLAMES (15-24-6) at HURRICANES (19-16-9)
TV: SNET-W, FS-CR
Last 10: Calgary 2-8-0; Carolina 5-3-2
Season series: The Calgary Flames and Carolina Hurricanes play for the second time this season. The Flames won 2-1 in overtime Dec. 12 in Calgary; Chris Butler scored the game-winning goal.
Big story: The Hurricanes begin a three-game homestand and will try to avoid losing back-to-back games in regulation for the first time since Nov. 29 and Dec. 1. Carolina received good news Sunday when center Eric Staal, who has missed the past three games with a lower-body injury, returned to practice.
“We’re going to see how I respond after a good practice [Sunday] and how I feel [Monday], but I'm feeling good now, and it's getting better,” Staal told reporters.
Flames: Calgary lost 2-1 to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday and has lost seven of eight games, five by shutout. The Flames hit the road for two games in two days with stops in Carolina on Monday followed by Nashville on Tuesday. They have lost five of their past six away from Scotiabank Saddledome.
"We gotta score goals to win games. I think three is the magic number," Mike Cammalleri said. "I think three is the number -- we've talked about it before -- that usually wins in this league. If we scored three we would have won [Saturday]. I guess one is a start, but it's not good enough.
"We're gonna get together, go on the road and hopefully get going here."
Hurricanes: Anton Khudobin has started the past five games in goal and is 4-1-0, allowing 10 goals. The Hurricanes' 3-0 loss Friday against the Columbus Blue Jackets was his first loss of the season, but there's a good chance he will be between the pipes Monday.
"His demeanor after, he wasn't happy with a couple [of goals]. I think he wished he had those back," coach Kirk Muller said. "But he's been playing well. After those first couple goals, he settled down and got going, and later on in the game he got better and better. I don't think it's going to affect him. I think he's focused and ready to get going again."
Who's hot: Khudobin is 6-1-0 with a 1.99 goal-against average and a .936 save percentage. Jeff Skinner has seven goals in six games for the Hurricanes.
Injury report: Flames defenseman Kris Russell (MCL) and forwards Blair Jones (torn meniscus) and Curtis Glencross (ankle) are on injured reserve. Right wing David Jones (eye) did not play Saturday. ... Hurricanes forward Jiri Tlusty (appendectomy, IR) is questionable for Monday. Center Riley Nash (lower body) was activated off IR and is expected to return to the lineup after missing five games. Defenseman Joni Pitkanen (heel) and goalie Cam Ward (lower body) are on IR.
