Flyers host Hurricanes in snow makeup game
Carolina Hurricanes vs. Philadelphia Flyers

HURRICANES (20-19-9) at FLYERS (25-19-6)

TV: FS-CR; CSN-PH

Last 10: Carolina 6-4-0; Philadelphia 5-3-2

Season series: This is the third of four games between the Carolina Hurricanes and Philadelphia Flyers. Carolina won the first two, each by a 2-1 score, with the most-recent game going to overtime before Manny Malhotra scored the game-winner on Nov. 5.

Big story: The game takes place a day later than originally scheduled, thanks to a snowstorm that pounded much of the Northeast on Tuesday. A snow emergency was declared in the city of Philadelphia.

The Flyers announced that fans with tickets to the game Tuesday will be able to use them Wednesday.

Team Scope:

Hurricanes: It's the first of a two-game road trip for Carolina, which went 1-2-0 on its recent three-game homestand. The Hurricanes fired 51 shots on goal Sunday, only to suffer a 5-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning at PNC Arena.

It was the first time since April 7, 2009 that Carolina took 50 shots in a game; the Hurricanes took 57 against the New York Islanders in that game, a franchise record. According to Elias Sports Bureau, the previous time the Hurricanes took at least twice as many shots as their opponent and lost by two goals or more was on Dec. 31, 2006, when they outshot Philadelphia, 42-19, and lost, 5-2.

"Nobody quit," Carolina coach Kirk Muller told the team website. "We were down early and all that, but after that, there were a lot of things that were really good about our game tonight. No one quit. It's just unfortunate about the outcome because there were a lot of good things."

With Carolina playing Wednesday instead of Tuesday in Philadelphia and Thursday at the Buffalo Sabres, the Hurricanes' scheduled home game against the Ottawa Senators on Friday night has been moved to Saturday, Jan. 25, at noon ET.

Flyers: Philadelphia headed back to Wells Fargo Center after getting three of a possible four points in a home-and-home series with the Islanders. The Flyers rallied for a 6-4 win against New York on Saturday, but blew a 3-1 lead en route to a 4-3 shootout loss at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Monday.

"We played pretty good, but in the third period we gave them a chance to come back," Flyers captain Claude Giroux told the team website. "They had a couple periods and they feed off power plays, scored twice and fed off the momentum. We have to stay out of the box. When it's 5-on-5, we're a good team, we just got to move our feet more and not take those penalties."

Who's hot: Hurricanes captain Eric Staal had a goal and an assist Sunday, giving him four points (one goal, three assists) in the past two games. Forward Alexander Semin has three goals in the past two. … Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds has seven points (two goals, five assists) during a four-game point streak. Matt Read has three goals and one assist in the past four games.

Injury report: Besides Joni Pitkanen (heel), who is out for the season, the Hurricanes could be without goalie Cam Ward (lower body) and left wing Drayson Bowman (lower body). They're day-to-day. … Flyers forward Jakub Voracek (upper body) is questionable. He appeared to injure his left hand in the third period Monday, and sat out the team's morning skate Tuesday. Forward Zac Rinaldo (ankle) is out.
