Coyotes 8, Hurricanes 4

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - The last time the Phoenix Coyotes scored five power-play goals in a game, they were the Winnipeg Jets. The Carolina Hurricanes had never allowed more than four since they transformed from the Hartford Whalers.

It was just that kind of night at Glendale Arena.

Ladislav Nagy recorded his second career hat trick and added two assists for his first five-point game and the Coyotes beat the Hurricanes 8-4 Saturday night.

Linemate Mike Johnson added two goals for the Coyotes, who rebounded from their worst loss of the season, 6-1 in Anaheim on Wednesday.

Mike Comrie had a goal and two assists for Phoenix, which had 13 players register at least one point.

"That was a lot of fun," said Nagy, who took over the team lead with 11 goals. "That was our best first two periods of the season. We had a lot of guys play great."

The Coyotes scored six times in the first 31 minutes, chasing Carolina goalie Cam Ward. The eight goals scored by Phoenix tied the most by the franchise since moving from Winnipeg in 1996. The five power-play goals were the most since the Jets had that many against Calgary on March 9, 1988.

Geoff Sanderson and Zbynek Michalek also scored for the Coyotes, who have won five of seven. Curtis Joseph made 24 saves and recorded his 408th NHL win, moving him past Glenn Hall into seventh place on the career list.

"Nagy and Johnson have been great over the last 12 games," Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky said. "Our record is much better over that span and those two guys are a big reason."

Eric Staal, rookie Andrew Ladd, Rod Brind'Amour and Frantisek Kaberle scored for the Hurricanes, who lost for the second time in two nights. They are 1-2 halfway through a six-game road trip - Carolina's longest of the season.

"It was unacceptable," Carolina defenseman Glen Wesley said. "We were out of position, running around instead of letting the puck come to us and being smart about it. Obviously, we have to clean up our end."

Ward allowed six goals on 18 shots before being replaced by Martin Gerber at 10:57 of the second period after Johnson made it 6-2 with his second of the game.

Comrie opened the scoring at 10:58, spinning Kaberle into a circle before beating Ward between the pads. Sanderson made it 2-0 just 1:41 later, scooping up a turnover and scoring a short-handed goal, Phoenix's second of the season. Johnson capped the Coyotes' first three-goal first period of the season at 18:08, deflecting Jamie Lundmark's shot past Ward for the first power-play goal.

The Coyotes struck three times again in the second, twice by Nagy and again by Johnson.

Notes: Phoenix forward Tyson Nash, out with an abdominal injury, will see a specialist next week in Philadelphia for the second time to decide if surgery is necessary. ... Carolina has been outscored 36-22 in the first period this season. ... Nagy is the first Coyotes player to reach double figures. ... Ladd, who scored in back-to-back games for the second time this season, left in the second period with a knee injury and didn't return. ... Johnson's first goal was his 300th NHL point.
