MONTREAL (AP) -Rod Brind'Amour felt the same way about his latest NHL milestone as he did after reaching previous ones.

Brind'Amour scored his second power-play goal of the game, and the 400th of his career, late in the second period to lift the Carolina Hurricanes to a 5-3 win over the struggling Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night.

"When it happens right now you say, 'Oh well, it's not a big deal,' but it's kind of like all those other ones," Brind'Amour said. "When you look back, you say, 'That's pretty good."'

The Carolina captain put his team ahead twice in the second period. Brind'Amour gave the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead with his 17th of the season 1:18 into the middle period before reaching the milestone with his 18th goal which made it 3-2 at 19:50.

"That's a lot of goals," said Eric Staal, who scored his 25th goal in the third. "I hope one day to get that many. He's a great player. He stepped up big for us on the power play. We needed those goals and that was a big one for our team."

Chad Larose had a short-handed goal as Carolina scored three times in the middle period, converting both of its power-play opportunities in the game. Erik Cole also added his 25th goal in the third to help the Hurricanes to their fourth win in six games.

Cam Ward stopped 43 shots for Carolina. He allowed Tomas Plekanec's penalty shot goal with 52.4 seconds remaining.

"You look at the first period and it looked like they had a plan to throw everything at the net," said Ward, who stopped 17 of 18 in the first. "There were a lot of shots from the corners or the wall and they were looking to create some traffic but we did a good job of getting to the rebounds and trying to clear them as best we could."

Montreal, which also got goals from Sheldon Souray and Radek Bonk, lost its sixth in a row.

The Canadiens, who have fallen out of a playoff position in the Eastern Conference, announced after the second period that injured goalie Cristobal Huet will have surgery on his left hamstring Sunday and will be sidelined indefinitely.

"It's not easy right now," Montreal captain Saku Koivu said. "It's frustrating and believe me we're trying to figure out the ways to turn things around and get those two points because that's what we're looking for."

Souray became the first Canadiens defenseman in 13 years to reach 20 goals when he opened the scoring at 17:36 of the first period. Detroit's Mathieu Schneider scored 20 goals with Montreal in 1993-94.

Brind'Amour beat David Aebischer on a power play early in the second to tie the score at 1 and Larose gave Carolina a 2-1 lead with his third of the season at 11:30 while the Hurricanes were killing a holding penalty on Josef Vasicek.

Bonk redirected Steve Begin's pass between Ward's pads for his 10th goal at 12:43 to tie it at 2.
