PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Rod Brind'Amour's lucky bounce helped the Carolina Hurricanes snap a three-game losing streak.
Brind'Amour banked a shootout shot in off Philadelphia goaltender Marty Biron and the crossbar to give the Hurricanes a 6-5 win over the Flyers on Saturday night.
"Obviously, when I saw the ref point at it when Biron made the save, I thought that it still had a chance to go in," Brind'Amour said. "I got a lucky bounce off his back."
Biron said he looked up to see where the puck was after Brind'Amour's shot.
"I could see it and it kind of was coming back toward me," Biron said. "I tried to squeeze the post to not let the puck go in. It kind of hit the crossbar, my head, the post, my pad and then in."
Brind'Amour's goal came after teammates Matt Cullen and Jeffrey Hamilton traded tallies in the tiebreaker with Philadelphia's Mike Richards and Joffrey Lupul.
"It's a good win, period, no matter who you're playing," Brind'Amour said. "We need wins desperately. We'll take them any way we can."
"There were a lot of bizarre goals out there both ways," Carolina coach Peter Laviolette said. "A lot of weird ones. It was not your typical goal-scoring game. There were redirects, double redirects, reviews. Anything you put at the net, it seemed like it had a chance of getting in."
Cory Stillman, who leads the Hurricanes with 16 goals, was helped off the ice after he injured a knee during a collision with Philadelphia defenseman Derian Hatcher at 15:02 of the first period. He didn't return.
Lupul scored three goals - his second hat trick in three games - and Scott Hartnell and Danny Briere also scored for the Flyers, who have won only one of eight home games (1-5-2) since opening the season 6-0 in Philadelphia.
Lupul also had a hat trick in an 8-2 win over Pittsburgh on Tuesday. He is the first Flyers player to record two hat tricks in the same week since Eric Lindros did it in back-to-back games against Florida and Montreal on March 18-20, 1995.
"The puck's kind of following me right now," Lupul said. "Pucks just bounce to me and I bank them in."
Carolina backup John Grahame made 36 saves and held off the Flyers late in the second period when he turned away a flurry of shots during back-to-back power plays. Biron stopped 29 shots for Philadelphia.
Lupul scored unassisted at 9:33 of the first period after blocking a shot by Dennis Seidenberg deep in the Flyers' zone and skating the length of the ice.
Wallin figured in the goals that put the Hurricanes ahead 2-1 after the first period.
After flipping in a rebound of a shot by Erik Cole at 13:49, his slap shot was redirected in by Walker at 15:21. It was Wallin's first goal in 36 games, dating to March 9 when he scored at Washington.
Cullen made it 3-1 by deflecting a shot by Craig Adams high over Biron at 2:17 of the second period.
The Flyers then scored twice on scrambles in front within a span of 2:04. Hartnell found the net at 5:28, and Lupul adding his second goal at 7:32 to tie it 3-3.
Staal put the Hurricanes back in front with a one-timer from the right circle at 13:20. Briere made it 4-4 just 30 seconds into the third period, scoring into an open net after taking a backhand pass from Hartnell.
After Letowski scored at 6:17, Lupul got the Flyers even again, this time at 5, with a power-play goal during a wild scramble at 11:46.
Notes: Carolina D Mike Commodore (finger) and D Frantisek Kaberle (healthy) were scratched. ... Hatcher returned to the Flyers lineup after missing two games (knee). ... Philadelphia had won all three previous games with the Hurricanes.
