VANCOUVER -- Rookie goaltender Eddie Lack made a great impression on the home crowd in his Rogers Arena debut.

Light-shooting defenseman Christopher Tanev scored early in the first period, and Lack made 31 saves for his first NHL shutout in his first start at home to lead the Vancouver Canucks to a 2-0 win against the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday night.

Jannik Hansen scored into an empty net with 1:15 left, and Chris Higgins had two assists for the Canucks, who have won five straight games for the first time this season.

Lack won the battle of backup goalies. The 25-year-old goalie made a sprawling save off Jiri Tlusty on a rebound at the side of the net in the opening minutes, but was in control the rest of the way.

Justin Peters, playing the first half of back-to-back games ahead of No.1 Cam Ward, finished with 24 saves for the Hurricanes, who had their season-high win streak snapped at three games.

Tanev scored his second goal of the season 3:35 in, beating Peters, who was screened by his own defenseman, low on the blocker side with a wrist shot from the top of the right faceoff circle.

Lack, whose last start was a 3-2 win in Carolina eight days earlier, made his best saves late in the second period, stuffing Riley Nash on a sharp-angle net drive then pushing across to get a glove on Patrick Dwyer's rebound attempt from the low slot. He added a similar stop on a Tuomo Ruutu rebound chance early in the third period, and stuffed an Eric Staal redirection in tight with four minutes left.

Lack also made a good stop on a spinning shot off the right wing by Jeff Skinner, who was named the NHL's First Star for scoring five goals last week, early in the second period, and gloved his slap shot on a power play 19 seconds into the third. It was one of a half-dozen good glove stops for Lack, who controlled his rebounds well.

Not be outdone, Peters, who was starting for the third time in four games and came in with a .922 save percentage, kept it close with a handful of great saves midway through the first period.

Vancouver had surrendered third-period leads five times in the past seven home games before building on a lead in a 3-1 win against the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday. The Canucks only had six shots in the third period against Carolina before Hansen's empty net goal.

Carolina's 27th-ranked power play generated almost nothing on four chances – though two were extremely short – against the Canucks' top-ranked penalty kill, and forced Peters to make four good saves on one shorthanded sequence for Vancouver in the second period.

Ward, who grew up near Edmonton, is expected to play against the Edmonton Oilers in the second game of Carolina's four-game road trip on Tuesday.
